Guess the 5-letter word in 6 tries

Wordle gives you six attempts to identify a hidden five-letter word. After each guess, every tile changes colour to tell you how close you were: green means the letter is correct and in the right position, yellow means the letter is in the word but somewhere else, and grey means it does not appear at all.

What makes the game interesting is that those three colours are the only information you get. Each guess is worth more for what it eliminates than for what it confirms, which is why experienced players often spend an early turn on a word they know is wrong.

How to play

  1. Type any valid five-letter word and press Enter to submit your first guess.
  2. Read the colours: green tiles are locked in place, yellow tiles tell you a letter is present but misplaced, and grey tiles rule the letter out entirely.
  3. Use what you learned to build a second guess that tests letters you have not tried yet, rather than shuffling the ones you already know.
  4. Keep narrowing the possibilities until the word is solved or your six attempts run out.

Strategy that actually helps

  • Open with a word rich in common letters. Words like CRANE, SLATE, and RAISE cover five of the most frequent letters in English and typically eliminate far more than a word built from rare consonants.
  • Spend your second guess on five entirely new letters if your first guess came back mostly grey. Testing ten distinct letters across two turns narrows the field faster than guessing at an answer too early.
  • Watch for repeated letters. Many players lose because they assume all five letters are distinct, but words like LEVEL, GEESE, and ABBEY are common traps.
  • When you have several green tiles and multiple candidates remaining, consider guessing a word that cannot be the answer but separates those candidates. Burning a turn on information is often better than a one-in-four gamble.
  • Pay attention to letter position, not just presence. A yellow S in the first slot tells you the word contains an S somewhere other than the start, which frequently means it ends in S or sits in the middle.

Frequently asked questions

How many guesses do you get in Wordle?
Six. Each guess must be a valid five-letter word, and the tile colours after every submission tell you which letters are correct and whether they are in the right position.
What is the best Wordle starting word?
There is no single perfect answer, but strong openers share a trait: they use five common, distinct letters. CRANE, SLATE, ADIEU, and RAISE all perform well because they test frequent vowels and consonants at once.
Can a letter appear twice in a Wordle answer?
Yes. Repeated letters are common and catch out a lot of players. Words such as LEVEL, ABBEY, and GEESE are all valid answers, so do not assume every letter is unique.
Is this Wordle free to play?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with no account, download, or signup, and works on phones, tablets, and desktop.
