About Brick Breaker

Brick Breaker is the paddle-and-ball arcade format with layered brick layouts that change as you advance. You steer a paddle along the bottom of the screen, keep the ball alive, and dismantle the wall above.

Later layouts are built to resist a single angle of attack, so clearing them means working out where to send the ball rather than simply returning it.

How to play

  1. 1Slide the paddle horizontally to intercept the ball before it drops off the bottom of the screen.
  2. 2Strike bricks to remove them, working through the wall layer by layer.
  3. 3Clear every brick to complete the layout and move on to the next.
  4. 4Each ball you fail to return costs a life.

Tips for clearing tougher layouts

  • Attack from the side rather than straight up. Vertical returns tend to bounce back along the same path and clear only a narrow column.
  • Deal with awkward corner bricks early, while you still have plenty of open wall to bounce off.
  • Control your rebound angle by choosing where on the paddle to make contact, rather than always centring the ball.
  • Watch for gaps opening in the middle of the wall. Sending the ball into one lets it rattle around and clear several bricks at once.
  • Slow down and reposition after each clear. Rushing into the next return is the most common way to lose a ball you had covered.
