Word Hunt hides words in a grid of letters, running horizontally, vertically, and diagonally, forwards or backwards. Your task is to find them all before time runs out.

Searching for words in noise is a different skill from knowing them. The grid gives no clues about meaning, so this is pattern recognition rather than vocabulary recall.

How to play

  1. Read the list of words to find.
  2. Search the grid for each one, in any direction.
  3. Select a word by dragging across its letters.
  4. Find them all before the timer expires.

Searching efficiently

  • Hunt for the first letter of a target word rather than reading the grid generally. Scanning for one specific character is much faster.
  • Look for unusual letters first. A word containing Q, Z, X, or J is far quicker to locate than one made of common letters.
  • Sweep the grid systematically, row by row, instead of letting your eye wander.
  • Check diagonals deliberately. They are consistently the most-missed direction and often hide the last remaining words.

Frequently asked questions

Can words run backwards?
Yes. Words may run in any of the eight directions, including backwards and diagonally, which is what makes the grids genuinely challenging.
What is the fastest way to find a word?
Scan for its rarest letter rather than reading the grid as a whole. Uncommon letters stand out immediately and pin down the word's location.
Are word searches useful for learning?
They build letter-pattern recognition and spelling familiarity, which is why they are common in classrooms, though they exercise recognition more than meaning.
