Learn new words with context

About Vocabulary Builder

Build a personal word list with meanings and review it until the words stick. Useful for exam preparation, language learning, and reading that keeps throwing up unfamiliar terms.

Words learned from a list in isolation fade quickly. What holds is words encountered in context and then used, which is why the review here works best alongside actual reading.

How to use it

  1. 1Add words you have encountered, with their meanings.
  2. 2Review your list regularly rather than only when adding to it.
  3. 3Use each new word in writing or conversation as soon as you can.

Learning words that stay learned

  • Record the sentence you met the word in, not just the definition. Context is what makes a word retrievable later.
  • Learn word parts rather than isolated words. Knowing that bene means good unlocks benefit, benevolent, benign, and benefactor at once.
  • Use a new word within a day or two of learning it. Production moves a word from recognition into active vocabulary.
  • Review in short sessions spread across days rather than one long list-reading.
  • Focus on words you actually encounter. Learning obscure words from a list produces recognition without usefulness.

Frequently asked questions

How many new words should I learn at once?

Around ten to fifteen at a time is manageable for most people. Larger batches produce more forgetting per word, so smaller sets reviewed repeatedly work better.

What is the difference between recognising a word and knowing it?

Recognition means you understand it when you read it; knowing it means you can produce it when you need it. Actively using a word is what moves it from one to the other.

Do word roots help?

Considerably. Learning common Latin and Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes lets you infer the meaning of unfamiliar words rather than memorising each separately.
