About Chess

Chess is played between two sides on a sixty-four square board, each starting with sixteen pieces. The object is checkmate: attacking the opposing king so that it cannot escape capture on the next move.

Every piece moves differently, and the whole game emerges from those few rules. There is no hidden information and no element of chance, which is why the same opening position has been studied for centuries without being exhausted.

How to play

  1. 1Click one of your pieces to select it. Green dots show every square it can legally move to.
  2. 2Click a highlighted square to make your move. Captures are made by moving onto an opposing piece.
  3. 3Keep your king safe: you cannot make a move that leaves it in check, and you must answer any check immediately.
  4. 4Checkmate wins the game. Choose Play vs Computer (you play White) or Play vs Human to share the screen with a friend.

How the pieces move

  • The pawn advances one square forward, or two from its starting position, but captures diagonally. On reaching the far rank it promotes, almost always to a queen.
  • The rook moves any distance along ranks and files. The bishop moves any distance diagonally and therefore stays on one colour all game.
  • The queen combines rook and bishop, moving any distance in any straight line, which makes it the most valuable piece on the board.
  • The knight moves in an L shape, two squares one way and one square across, and is the only piece that jumps over others.
  • The king moves one square in any direction. It can also castle once per game with an unmoved rook, provided the squares between them are empty and the king is not moving through check.

Principles for a stronger game

  • Control the centre early. Pieces placed centrally reach more squares, and space in the middle translates directly into options.
  • Develop your knights and bishops before launching an attack. Bringing the queen out early usually just gives your opponent tempo as they chase it.
  • Castle early to tuck the king behind a wall of pawns and connect your rooks.
  • Before every move, check what your opponent's last move threatened. A large share of games below club level are decided purely by unanswered one-move threats.
  • Trade pieces when you are ahead in material and avoid trades when you are behind. Simplification favours whoever already holds the advantage.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between check and checkmate?

Check means the king is under attack but has a legal way out, by moving, blocking, or capturing the attacker. Checkmate means the king is attacked and no legal escape exists, which ends the game.

What is castling and when can I do it?

Castling moves the king two squares toward a rook and places that rook on the far side. It requires that neither piece has moved, that the squares between them are empty, and that the king is not in check or passing through an attacked square.

Which chess piece is the most valuable?

The queen, conventionally counted as nine points, against five for a rook, three each for bishops and knights, and one for a pawn. The king has no point value because losing it ends the game.

How does a game end in a draw?

Through stalemate, where a player has no legal move but is not in check, as well as by insufficient material, threefold repetition, the fifty-move rule, or mutual agreement.
