Math Challenge presents arithmetic problems against a clock and asks you to answer as many as you can. Difficulty scales with your performance, so the problems track your actual level rather than a fixed one.

The value is in the retrieval. Working out a fact under mild time pressure, over and over, is what moves arithmetic from calculation into recall.

How to play

  1. Read the problem and enter your answer.
  2. Answer as many as you can before the timer expires.
  3. Correct answers build your score and raise the difficulty.

Getting faster

  • Learn the number bonds to ten and the times tables to twelve by heart. Almost every larger problem decomposes into these.
  • Round and adjust for awkward sums: 47 plus 38 is easier as 47 plus 40 minus 2.
  • Practise in short regular sessions. Ten minutes daily builds recall far more effectively than an hour once a week.
  • Prioritise accuracy first and let speed follow. Fast wrong answers reinforce the wrong fact.

Frequently asked questions

What age is this suitable for?
The difficulty adapts as you answer, so it works from early primary arithmetic through to adults keeping mental maths sharp.
Does timed practice actually help?
Yes, for fluency specifically. Mild time pressure encourages retrieving facts from memory rather than recalculating them, which is what builds automaticity.
Can I use it for classroom practice?
Yes. It needs no login or setup, which makes it practical as a warm-up activity or an early-finisher task.
