About Pair Generator

Split a group into random pairs for breakout discussions, peer review, or informal coffee chats, with odd numbers handled sensibly.

Random pairing is what stops the same people working together every time. Left to choose, people pair with whoever they already know, which is usually the opposite of what pairing is for.

How to use it

  1. 1Enter your list of names.
  2. 2Generate pairs.
  3. 3Re-run if a pairing does not work for reasons the tool cannot know about.

Where pairing works

  • Breakout discussions, where pairs produce more participation than groups of four or more.
  • Peer review, where random pairing spreads knowledge across the team rather than within cliques.
  • Coffee chats in remote teams, which is one of the few reliable ways to build cross-team relationships.
  • Pair programming rotations, where rotating partners spreads context.
  • Onboarding, pairing new joiners with different people each week rather than a single buddy.

Frequently asked questions

What happens with an odd number of people?

One group of three is formed rather than leaving someone unpaired, which is usually preferable to excluding a person from the activity.

Why randomise pairs instead of letting people choose?

Because people pair with those they already know. Random pairing is what actually spreads relationships and knowledge across a team.

How often should pairs be rotated?

For recurring activities like coffee chats or pairing rotations, weekly or fortnightly works well. Frequent enough to spread contact, infrequent enough to build something.
