Weighting is where most manual attempts go wrong. Averaging percentages only works when every assessment counts equally, which is rarely how a course is actually structured.

How weighted grades work

  • Multiply each score by its weighting, add the results, then divide by the total weighting used so far.
  • Scoring 90 on something worth ten per cent moves your grade far less than scoring 70 on something worth half.
  • A simple average of your percentages is only correct when every assessment carries identical weight.
  • To find what you need on a final assessment, work backwards: subtract the weighted points you already hold from your target, then divide by the final's weighting.
  • Check whether your course drops the lowest score or scales marks, since either changes the arithmetic entirely.

How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each score by its weighting, sum those products, and divide by the total weighting. Averaging the raw percentages gives a wrong answer whenever assessments carry different weights.
What do I need on the final to get the grade I want?
Subtract the weighted points you have already earned from your target grade, then divide the remainder by the final assessment's weighting. The calculator does this for you.
Why is my average different from what I expected?
Almost always because of weighting. A high score on a small assessment moves the overall grade much less than people expect, and a low one on a heavily weighted piece moves it much more.
