About One Word Check-in

Everyone describes how they are arriving in a single word. It takes under a minute for most groups and is the fastest way to read a room before starting.

The single-word constraint is doing the work. It is quick enough that nobody feels put upon, and specific enough that a room full of tired or frustrated people becomes visible immediately.

How to run it

  1. 1Ask everyone for one word describing how they are arriving.
  2. 2Go round quickly without commentary between contributions.
  3. 3Notice the overall pattern rather than analysing each word.
  4. 4Adjust your plan for the session if the pattern warrants it.

Using what you learn

  • Do not interrogate individual words. Asking someone to explain defeats the speed the format depends on.
  • Watch for a pattern. Several people saying tired or stretched is worth responding to, even briefly.
  • Model honesty by going first with something real rather than a default positive word.
  • Use it consistently at the start of recurring meetings, so it becomes routine rather than an event.
  • Follow up privately with anyone whose word concerns you.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a one-word check-in take?

Under a minute for most groups, and only a couple of minutes even with twenty people, which is why it works as a standing opener.

Should I ask people to explain their word?

Generally no. The value is in speed and in the overall pattern. Asking for explanations turns a one-minute opener into a much longer activity.

What if several people give negative words?

That is useful information and worth acknowledging briefly. Naming that the room seems stretched, and adjusting expectations for the session, is usually better than proceeding as planned.
