Writing questions is itself a strong learning activity. Producing a plausible wrong answer requires understanding exactly where the misconception lies, which is often harder than answering the question.

How to use it

  1. Add each question with its answer options.
  2. Mark the correct answer for each.
  3. Run the quiz and review the score at the end.

Writing better multiple-choice questions

  • Make the wrong answers plausible. Options that are obviously absurd let students score well without knowing anything.
  • Base distractors on real misconceptions. A wrong answer that reflects a common error tells you something useful when students pick it.
  • Keep all options a similar length. The longest option is correct often enough that students learn to exploit it.
  • Avoid all of the above and none of the above, which test reading strategy more than knowledge.
  • Ask about application rather than recall where you can. Questions requiring the student to use an idea reveal understanding that definitions do not.

How many options should each question have?
Four is standard. Three works if you cannot write a fourth plausible distractor, which is better than padding with an obviously wrong option that students can dismiss instantly.
Is writing quiz questions a good study activity?
Yes, and it is underused. Producing plausible wrong answers forces you to identify precisely where misunderstandings occur, which requires deeper understanding than answering.
