About Turn Order

Shuffle your team into a random speaking order, so stand-ups and round-robins do not always begin with the same person.

Order matters more than teams usually realise. Whoever speaks first sets the tone and depth for everyone after them, and a fixed order means the same person does that every day.

How to use it

  1. 1Enter your team members.
  2. 2Generate a random order.
  3. 3Work through the list in the order shown.

Why randomising order helps

  • It breaks anchoring. The first speaker establishes how long and how detailed contributions will be, and rotating who that is produces more variety.
  • It keeps attention up, because nobody can predict when their turn is coming.
  • It prevents the last person from always being rushed as the meeting runs out of time.
  • It removes the implicit seniority signal in a fixed order that always starts with the same person.
  • It works well in retrospectives and check-ins, where the first contribution strongly shapes what follows.

Frequently asked questions

Why randomise speaking order?

Because the first speaker anchors the tone and depth for everyone else. A fixed order means the same person sets that every time, and later speakers get progressively less time.

Does this help in stand-ups?

Yes. It keeps attention higher because turns are unpredictable, and it stops the same person always being last when time runs short.

Can I use it for presentation order?

Yes, and it is often fairer than volunteering, since going first and going last are meaningfully different experiences.
