Each die is independent, which has a consequence people frequently misjudge: rolling two dice does not produce an even spread of totals. Seven comes up six times more often than two.

How to use it

  2. Roll, and read the individual results along with the total.
  3. Roll again as often as the game requires.

The probabilities behind two dice

  • Seven is the most likely total, with six of the thirty-six possible combinations producing it.
  • Two and twelve are the least likely, with one combination each, making them six times rarer than seven.
  • Six and eight each have five combinations, five and nine have four, and so on, which produces the familiar triangular distribution.
  • The chance of rolling at least one six with two dice is about thirty per cent, not the one third people often assume, because the case where both are sixes is otherwise counted twice.

Frequently asked questions

Why is seven the most common roll with two dice?
Because more combinations produce it than any other total. Six of the thirty-six possible pairings sum to seven, whereas only one produces two and only one produces twelve.
Are the rolls genuinely random?
They use your browser's pseudorandom generator, which is statistically appropriate for games. Each roll is independent of the last.
Can I roll more than two dice?
