About Crossword

A crossword sets a grid of interlocking squares against numbered clues running across and down. Every answer shares letters with those crossing it, so each solved entry helps with its neighbours.

That interlocking is the whole point. A clue you cannot begin to parse often becomes obvious once two or three crossing letters are in place.

How to play

  1. 1Read a clue and count the squares available for its answer.
  2. 2Type your answer into the grid, where it will fill the numbered entry.
  3. 3Use letters from completed answers to help with the clues that cross them.
  4. 4Continue until the grid is full and consistent.

Solving more efficiently

  • Start with fill-in-the-blank clues and short entries. They are the least ambiguous and give you crossing letters cheaply.
  • Work the crossings deliberately. Two or three known letters usually reduce a hard clue to a single plausible answer.
  • Watch the tense and number of the clue: a plural clue takes a plural answer, and a past-tense clue takes a past-tense one.
  • Leave a clue you cannot solve and come back once the crossings have filled in. Staring at it rarely helps.
  • Question an answer you were confident about if its crossings refuse to work. A wrong entry that feels right blocks everything around it.
