2048 is played on a four-by-four grid. Each move slides every tile in one direction, and when two tiles of the same value collide they merge into one tile of double the value. A new tile appears after every move, and your goal is to build a tile worth 2048.

The difficulty comes from the grid filling up. Every move adds a tile, so a game is really a race between the value you are building and the space you have left to work in.

How to play

  1. Use the arrow keys or swipe to slide all tiles in one direction at once.
  2. When two tiles showing the same number meet, they merge into a single tile of twice the value.
  3. After each move a new 2 or 4 appears in a random empty square.
  4. Keep merging upward until you build a 2048 tile. The game ends when the grid is full and no merges remain.

The strategy that changes everything

  • Pick one corner and commit to it. Keep your largest tile there and never move in the direction that would dislodge it. Most players who cannot pass 512 are moving in all four directions freely.
  • Build a descending row along the edge that holds your biggest tile, so values step down neatly and merge in sequence.
  • Treat one direction as forbidden. If your anchor is bottom-left, avoid pressing up entirely, because a single upward move can shuffle your largest tile into the middle where it becomes very hard to merge.
  • Keep the board as empty as you can. Merging small tiles early costs nothing and buys the space you will need later.
  • Think one move ahead about where the new tile can appear. A move that leaves only one empty square gives you no room to recover.

Frequently asked questions

What is the goal of 2048?
To combine tiles until you create one worth 2048. Tiles merge when two of equal value slide into each other, so reaching 2048 means merging all the way up from 2, 4, 8, 16 and onward.
Can you keep playing after reaching 2048?
Yes. Reaching 2048 is the nominal goal, but the grid keeps working the same way afterwards, and experienced players continue on toward 4096 and beyond.
Why do I keep losing at around 512?
Almost always because of corner discipline. If you allow your largest tile to move away from a fixed corner, your big values scatter across the grid and can no longer be merged in sequence.
Is 2048 a game of luck or skill?
Both, but mostly skill. New tiles appear randomly, yet consistent corner strategy and keeping the board open will take almost any player far past what random play achieves.
