About Ludo

Ludo is a race game for two to four players. Each player has four tokens, and the aim is to move all of them from your starting yard around the board and into your home column.

A roll of six is what releases a token from the yard and also earns another roll, so the early game is often spent waiting for one while your opponents advance.

How to play

  1. 1Roll the dice on your turn.
  2. 2Roll a six to move a token out of your yard onto the board. Sixes also earn you an extra roll.
  3. 3Move a token clockwise around the track by the number rolled.
  4. 4Landing on a square occupied by an opponent sends their token back to their yard.
  5. 5Bring all four tokens into your home column to win.

Choosing your move

  • Get more than one token onto the board early. A single token is easy to hunt and leaves you no choice when you roll.
  • Take a capture when it is available. Sending an opponent's token back undoes all of its progress at once.
  • Keep tokens on safe squares when you cannot make progress, particularly when opponents are close behind.
  • Avoid bunching your tokens together, since a single well-placed opponent roll can then threaten several at once.
  • Weigh advancing a leading token against releasing a new one. Spreading your risk usually beats racing one token home.

How many players can play Ludo?

Two to four. Each controls four tokens of one colour, and with fewer than four players the unused colours simply stay out of play.

What happens when you roll a six?

You may bring a token out of your yard onto the board, and you also get another roll. It is the only way to release a token, which is why sixes shape the whole early game.

How do you capture an opponent's token?

By landing on the square it occupies, which sends that token back to its yard to start again. Safe squares are the exception and cannot be captured on.
