Pattern Memory shows a sequence and asks you to reproduce it. Each successful round adds another step, so the sequence grows until you can no longer hold it.

The number you reach is a rough measure of working memory span, which for most adults sits somewhere around seven items before chunking strategies come into play.

How to play

  1. Watch the sequence play through carefully.
  2. Repeat it back in the same order.
  3. Each correct round extends the sequence by one step.
  4. One mistake ends the run.

Remembering longer sequences

  • Chunk the sequence into groups of three or four rather than treating it as one long list. This is the same reason phone numbers are written in blocks.
  • Say the sequence to yourself as it plays. Rehearsing it verbally holds it in memory considerably longer than watching passively.
  • Attach a shape or path to the positions. Spatial patterns are easier to recall than abstract order.
  • Watch the whole sequence before starting to respond. Beginning early is the most common cause of an error near the end.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good score at pattern memory?
Most people manage somewhere between five and nine steps before making a mistake, which reflects typical working memory span. Chunking pushes that number higher.
Does this improve memory generally?
It improves performance at this kind of sequence recall, and chunking is a genuinely transferable technique. Broad improvements to everyday memory are much less well supported.
Why do I fail near the end of long sequences?
Because early items are rehearsed most and later ones least. Repeating the whole sequence to yourself as it plays helps hold the tail of it.
