Touch typing is a genuine investment. Progress is slow at first and typically slower than hunt-and-peck for the first few weeks, which is precisely why most people abandon it before the payoff.

How to use it

Learning to touch type properly

  • Never look at the keyboard, even when it slows you dramatically. Looking down is the habit that prevents touch typing from ever developing.
  • Keep each finger to its assigned keys. Reaching with the nearest finger feels faster now and caps your speed permanently.
  • Prioritise accuracy over speed throughout. Speed follows accuracy, and errors practised repeatedly become habits.
  • Practise for ten to fifteen minutes daily. Muscle memory forms through frequency rather than session length.
  • Expect to be slower than your old method for two to three weeks. This is the normal cost of the switch, not a sign it is not working.

How long does it take to learn touch typing?

Most people reach usable speed within a few weeks of short daily practice and match their old speed in about a month. Reaching a genuinely fast rate takes a few months of consistency.

Why should I not look at the keyboard?

Because looking down is what prevents the finger-position memory from forming. It feels faster in the moment and is the single biggest reason people never make the transition.

What is the home row?

The middle row where your fingers rest: ASDF for the left hand and JKL semicolon for the right. The F and J keys usually carry small ridges so you can find the position without looking.
