Essay Writing Tips

  • • Start with a strong thesis statement that clearly states your argument
  • • Each body paragraph should focus on one main idea that supports your thesis
  • • Use specific examples and evidence to support each point
  • • Your conclusion should restate your thesis and summarize key points

About Essay Outline Builder

Build an essay outline section by section, from your thesis through supporting points to a conclusion, then use it as the plan you write from.

Outlining first is what separates an argument from a sequence of paragraphs. If the structure does not hold up in outline form, it will not hold up at three thousand words either.

How to use it

  1. 1State your thesis in one sentence. If you cannot, the argument is not ready to write yet.
  2. 2List the main points that support it, one per section.
  3. 3Under each point, note the evidence you will use.
  4. 4Check the order, then write from the outline.

Building an argument that holds

  • Make the thesis arguable. A statement nobody would dispute is a topic, not a thesis, and produces description rather than argument.
  • Give each paragraph one job. If you cannot summarise a paragraph in a short phrase, it is doing too much.
  • Address the strongest objection to your argument rather than the weakest. Engaging seriously with the counter-case is what makes an essay convincing.
  • Check that each point actually supports the thesis. Interesting material that does not serve the argument belongs somewhere else.
  • Write the introduction last. It is far easier once you know what the essay actually says.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good thesis statement?

It should be specific, arguable, and stated in a single sentence. If nobody could reasonably disagree with it, it is a topic rather than a thesis and will produce description instead of argument.

How detailed should an outline be?

Detailed enough that each section has a clear point and named evidence. If the outline shows a gap in the argument, that gap is far cheaper to fix now than after drafting.

Should I write the introduction first?

Usually last. Introductions are much easier to write once the essay exists, and drafting one first often locks you into a structure the argument then outgrows.
