About World Geography

Explore an interactive world map to learn countries, capitals, and where they sit relative to one another. Useful for geography revision at any level.

Location is worth learning properly because so much else hangs on it. Climate, trade, conflict, and migration all become far easier to understand once you know what borders what.

How to use it

  1. 1Explore the map and select countries to see their details.
  2. 2Work region by region rather than trying to cover the world at once.
  3. 3Test yourself on what you have covered before adding a new region.

Learning geography that sticks

  • Learn by region, not alphabetically. Neighbouring countries reinforce each other because you learn them as a shape rather than a list.
  • Anchor on large or distinctive countries first, then fill in around them.
  • Connect places to something you already know, such as a news story, a food, or a sports team. Isolated facts fade; connected ones do not.
  • Sketch regions from memory. Drawing a rough outline forces recall in a way that looking at a map never does.
  • Be aware that common map projections distort area badly. Mercator makes Greenland look comparable to Africa, when Africa is about fourteen times larger.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries are there in the world?

There are 195 UN member and observer states, though the total depends on which disputed territories are counted, which is why sources differ.

Why does Greenland look so large on world maps?

Because the Mercator projection inflates areas near the poles. Greenland appears comparable to Africa but is roughly fourteen times smaller, one of the best-known distortions in mapping.

What is the best way to memorise countries?

Work region by region rather than alphabetically, and sketch outlines from memory. Learning neighbours together builds a spatial picture that a list cannot.
