How to Play

Each person responds with the first word that comes to mind from the previous one. It is quick, revealing, and works well as an energiser before focused work.

Speed is the constraint that makes it interesting. Deliberating produces sensible connections; responding immediately produces the unexpected ones.

How to run it

  1. Someone says a starting word.
  2. The next person responds immediately with whatever it brings to mind.
  3. Continue round the group without pausing.
  4. Stop after a round or two.

Keeping it moving

  • Insist on speed. A pause to think defeats the entire point of the exercise.
  • Do not ask people to justify their associations, which slows everything and makes people self-conscious.
  • Keep it to one or two full rounds. It is a warm-up, not an activity.
  • Use it before creative work specifically, where loosening up associations is genuinely useful.
