About Decision Maker

Enter your options and let the tool choose one at random. It is for the decisions where the choice matters less than the time being spent on it.

Not every decision deserves deliberation. Where the options are genuinely close, the cost of deciding can exceed the difference between them, and picking at random is the rational response.

How to use it

  1. 1Enter each option you are considering.
  2. 2Let the tool pick one.
  3. 3Notice your reaction to the result before acting on it.

When randomising is the right call

  • When the options are genuinely close in value. If you cannot tell them apart after reasonable thought, further thought is unlikely to help.
  • When the group is deadlocked and the disagreement is costing more than the decision is worth.
  • When you want to avoid the appearance of favouritism in choosing who goes first or who gets what.
  • When you suspect you are procrastinating by deliberating rather than genuinely weighing anything.
  • As a preference test: your reaction to the result often tells you what you actually wanted, which is worth more than the result itself.

Frequently asked questions

How many options can I enter?

As many as you need. Each is treated as equally likely, so a longer list simply lowers the chance of any single option.

Should I really let a tool decide for me?

For close decisions, yes. Where options are genuinely similar, the time spent deciding costs more than the difference between them. For consequential decisions, use it to surface your preference rather than to settle the matter.

Are all options equally likely?

Yes. Every option you enter has the same chance of being selected, with no weighting applied.
