Art at this level covers colour, the elements of art, famous artists and paintings, and different styles. It builds both making skills and the vocabulary to talk about what you see.
The most useful thing an adult can do is separate skill from choice. A child who believes realistic drawing is the only good drawing will give up early; seeing that Matisse and Mondrian chose their approaches changes what they think their own work can be.
It builds observation, fine motor control, and visual vocabulary, and it gives children a way to express ideas that does not depend on writing, which matters for those who find writing difficult.
Describe what you notice rather than judging it. Commenting on a specific choice of colour or line shows you looked, which is more meaningful than general praise.
Point out that drawing is a practised skill rather than a talent, and show artists who work in non-realistic styles deliberately. The belief that realism is the only valid goal is what stops most children.
