Impressionism, abstract, realism, and surrealism
❓ A painting looks exactly like a photograph of a bowl of fruit. What style is it?
✅ Realism! Realist artists try to show exactly what they see, like a photo painted by hand!
❓ A painting shows only squares and circles in different colors, no recognizable objects. What style?
✅ Abstract art! Abstract artists use shapes, colors, and textures to express feelings rather than things!
❓ Salvador Dalí painted melting clocks in a desert. What style is this?
✅ Surrealism! Surrealists painted impossible, dreamlike scenes — things that can't happen in real life!
🌟 Fun Fact!
Salvador Dalí had a pet ocelot (a small wild cat) named Babou that he took everywhere — to restaurants, on ocean liners, and to parties! People thought it was just a regular cat with unusual spots! 🐆
Art styles show children that the same subject can be painted in completely different ways, and that those differences were deliberate choices rather than differences in skill.
This matters for confidence. A child who thinks realistic drawing is the only good drawing will give up early. Seeing that Matisse and Mondrian made deliberate choices opens up what their own work can be.
Art that does not try to depict recognisable objects, using colour, shape, and line to convey feeling or idea instead. It is a deliberate choice rather than an inability to draw realistically.
Impressionists aimed to capture light and a passing moment rather than precise detail, using short visible brushstrokes and often painting outdoors. The visible brushwork was considered unfinished at the time.
Because it shows that different approaches are deliberate choices rather than differences in skill, which gives children permission to make choices in their own work.
