The useful question is not who painted this but why did they paint it that way. Once children see that artists made choices, they start making deliberate choices themselves.
Ones with a distinctive, recognisable style: Van Gogh, Matisse, Kandinsky, Mondrian, Kahlo, and Seurat all work well because their approach is visible immediately and easy to try.
Start with description rather than judgement. Asking what they can see, then what they notice first and why, produces much better conversation than asking whether they like it.
Trying an artist's technique usually teaches more than copying a specific work, because it makes the artist's choices something the child experiences rather than reproduces.
