Quick Choice Activity

This or That

Make quick choices between two options

Question 1 of 15

Force a choice between two options and let people defend it. Fast, funny, and revealing about how people weigh things.

It differs from Would You Rather in scale: these are everyday preferences rather than dilemmas, which makes it lighter and quicker to run.

How to run it

  1. Present two options.
  2. Everyone picks a side, physically or by hand.
  3. Ask one or two people from each side why.
  4. Move to the next pairing.

Running it well

  • Have people move physically to a side of the room if you are in person. It changes the energy considerably.
  • Choose pairings that split the group. Options where everyone agrees produce nothing.
  • Ask for reasoning from both sides, not just the minority.
  • Keep it fast. Four or five pairings is usually the right length.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from Would You Rather?
This or That uses everyday preferences, while Would You Rather poses dilemmas with real trade-offs. This one is lighter and faster to run.
Does it work remotely?
Yes, using reactions or the chat to indicate a side, though the physical version where people move across the room has noticeably more energy.
How many pairings should I use?
Four or five. The format is quick and repetitive enough that it stops being interesting beyond that.
