About Elementary Learning Platform

World geography gives children a framework for everything else they hear about the world. Knowing where a country is makes news, history, and climate far easier to understand.

Worth teaching early: common map projections distort the world significantly. The Mercator projection makes countries near the poles look far larger than they are, which quietly shapes how people picture the world.

Ideas worth covering

  • The seven continents and five oceans, and roughly where they sit relative to each other.
  • The equator, the poles, and how latitude relates to climate.
  • Major physical features: the largest mountain ranges, rivers, and deserts.
  • That map projections distort shape or area, and every flat map involves a compromise.

Things to do at home

  • Use a globe alongside flat maps, which is the clearest way to show how projections distort.
  • Find countries mentioned in the news, connecting places to events.
  • Trace where food in the kitchen comes from and locate those countries.
  • Sketch continents freehand from memory, which forces recall far more than looking at a map.

Frequently asked questions

How many continents and oceans are there?

Seven continents: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania, and South America. Five oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic.

Why does Greenland look so big on maps?

Because the Mercator projection stretches areas near the poles. Greenland appears comparable to Africa but is roughly fourteen times smaller. A globe shows the true relationship.

What is the equator?

The imaginary line around the middle of Earth, equidistant from both poles. Regions near it receive the most direct sunlight year-round, which is why they are consistently warm.
