About Elementary Learning Platform

Social studies covers communities, maps, geography, and history. It gives children a framework for understanding the world beyond their immediate experience.

The skill running through all of it is evidence. Knowing that we learn about places and the past from sources, and that sources can be partial, is what makes this a subject rather than a collection of facts.

What the subject covers

  • Communities: who provides services, how they are paid for, and why rules exist.
  • Maps and directions: symbols, keys, scale, and compass points.
  • Geography: continents, oceans, countries, and physical features.
  • History: chronology, sources, and how change happens over time.

Supporting a child in social studies

  • Connect topics to the child's own life: their street, their family history, their local area.
  • Use real maps on real journeys rather than only maps in books.
  • Talk to older relatives about their childhood, which is oral history and usually fascinating.
  • Ask how we know when a claim about the past comes up, which builds the habit of thinking about evidence.

Frequently asked questions

What is social studies?

The study of people and societies, covering geography, history, civics, and communities. At elementary level it focuses on how communities work and how places and the past can be understood.

How do I make history interesting for a child?

Start with their own family and local area. Personal chronology, old photographs, and interviews with relatives make the past concrete in a way that dates never do.

What map skills should elementary children have?

Using a key, understanding that maps represent real places at reduced scale, following compass directions, and reading simple grid references.
