History at this level is less about dates than about understanding that the past was different, that change happens over time, and that we know about it through evidence.
The idea of a source is the foundation. Understanding that we learn about the past from things people left behind, and that those things can be incomplete or biased, is what separates history from storytelling.
Something created at the time by someone present, such as a letter, photograph, or object. A secondary source is a later account written by someone who was not there.
Through evidence people left behind: written records, objects, buildings, and images. Historians interpret this evidence, which is why accounts can differ and why sources need questioning.
A few anchor dates help, but understanding sequence, cause, and consequence matters far more. Placing events relative to each other is more useful than reciting years.
