The common gap is that children learn shapes only in their typical orientation. A square rotated forty-five degrees is frequently called a diamond, which shows the shape was learned as a picture rather than as a set of properties.

How to practise at home

  • Hunt for shapes in the house and outdoors, naming them by properties rather than appearance.
  • Rotate shapes deliberately when naming them, so orientation is separated from identity.
  • Build 3D shapes from paper or construction toys, which makes faces, edges, and vertices countable.
  • Measure real things. Working out the perimeter of a room or the area of a rug gives the formulas a purpose.
