Reading comprehension is not a single skill but several working together: decoding the words, knowing what they mean, holding the sentence in memory, and connecting it to what you already know.

This is why background knowledge matters so much. A child who knows nothing about the topic will struggle with a passage even when they can read every word on the page, which is often mistaken for a reading problem.

How to practise at home

  • Talk about books rather than only testing recall. Predicting, questioning, and connecting to experience all build comprehension.
  • Read aloud to children beyond the age they can read themselves, which exposes them to more complex language than they can decode.
  • Ask why and how questions rather than only what, since those require inference.
  • Build background knowledge broadly. Museums, documentaries, and conversation all feed reading comprehension.
