Grammar is the set of patterns that make writing clear. Children already use most of these patterns correctly in speech, and much of the teaching is about naming what they already do so they can control it deliberately.

Grammar taught in isolation transfers poorly to writing. Applying it to a child's own sentences is consistently more effective than exercises on unrelated ones.

How to practise at home

  • Correct grammar in the child's own writing rather than in worksheet sentences, which is what makes it transfer.
  • Read aloud. Most run-on sentences and agreement errors are audible even when they are not visible.
  • Focus on one thing at a time. Marking every error at once is discouraging and rarely improves anything.
  • Name the parts of speech in ordinary conversation, which builds the vocabulary painlessly.

Common difficulties

  • Subject-verb agreement, particularly with collective nouns or when words separate the subject from the verb.
  • Apostrophes, especially the difference between its and it's, which reverses the usual possessive rule.
  • Run-on sentences joined with commas where a full stop or conjunction is needed.
  • Inconsistent tense, drifting between past and present within a piece of writing.

When should children learn formal grammar terms?

Most curricula introduce nouns, verbs, and adjectives around ages six to seven, with more complex terms following. Using the terms in everyday conversation makes them familiar before they are formally taught.

What is the difference between its and it's?

It's with an apostrophe means it is or it has. Its without one shows possession. It is the exception to the usual rule that apostrophes indicate possession, which is why it causes so much difficulty.

Do grammar worksheets improve writing?

Only weakly on their own. Research consistently finds that grammar taught in isolation transfers poorly, whereas applying it to the child's own writing produces much better results.
